Author: Akhtar Badshah, PhD

Akhtar Badshah, PhD is an internationally recognized expert on social impact, philanthropy, CSR and international development, an author and artist. He is a Distinguished Practitioner and Faculty at the University of Washington, School of Business (Bothell Campus) and Evans School of Public Policy and Governance. He is also a faculty lead at START Center at the Department of Public Health, University of Washington.

In addition, Dr. Badshah is the co-founder of Purpose Mindset and the founder and Chief Catalyst of Catalytic Innovators Group (CIG), a consulting practice focused on accelerating social impact through catalytic innovation. CIG offers consulting services around social impact and has launched Accelerating Social Transformation, a professional development course for those working in the social impact space, at the University of Washington.

Formerly, he was the Senior Director of Microsoft Citizenship and Public Affairs, where he led Microsoft’s philanthropy program from 2004 – 2014 and administered the company’s global community investment and employee programs. Through monetary grants, software and curriculum donations, technology solutions, and employee giving, Microsoft supports programs and organizations that address the needs of communities worldwide. Since 1983, Microsoft and its employees have provided around $5 billion in cash, services and software to nonprofits around the world through localized, company-sponsored giving and volunteer campaigns. Among his responsibilities, Dr. Badshah managed the philanthropic elements of Microsoft’s YouthSpark, a global initiative that is designed to help youth into opportunities through training, employment and help starting their own ventures.

Dr. Badshah’s new book, Purpose Mindset: How Microsoft Inspires its Employees and Alumni to Change the World, tells the inside story behind how Microsoft built and continues to foster its culture of giving, including powerful insights from Bill Gates, Satya Nadella, Brad Smith, Jean-Phillipe Courtois, other Microsoft leaders past and present, and alumni. The book is published by Harper Collins Leadership and is a Microsoft Alumni Network imprint.

He is also the co-author of the book Technology at the Margins – How IT Meets the Needs of the Emerging Markets, published by Wiley and Sons and the author of Our Urban Future, published by Zed Books.

Dr. Badshah serves on the board of directors of several organizations including, Global Washington, the Microsoft Alumni Network; The Indus Entrepreneur, Seattle Chapter; and Restart Partners, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to providing policy and technical assistance to Washington state and other locations to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate is impacts on citizens, communities, and economies.

Dr. Badshah received his PhD and Masters in Architecture and Environmental Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his undergraduate degree in Architecture from the School of Architecture at the Center for Environmental Planning and Technology in Ahmedabad, India. Dr. Badshah is an accomplished artist and he and his family are very active philanthropists in the Seattle area.
